SCCA gets out of the rally business, Rally America set to take over

The Sports Car Club of America has announced that due to spiraling insurance costs, it will discontinue its ProRally and club rally programs at the end of 2004. “We were left with no alternative,†SCCA president Steve Johnson told AutoWeek. “We couldn’t ask the rest of our members to continue to carry an unfair share of the financial burden.†However, says Johnson, negotiations are well under way for another organization, Rally America, to take over the series.
Rally America is owned and led by ProRally competitor Doug Havir. “It’s going to be a challenge to transition the rally program smoothly from the SCCA,†said Havir. “But I am supremely confident that Rally America has the resources, including the help of many highly experienced people with a deep-rooted passion for the sport, to make it happen. Not only will we have a full rally calendar in 2005, we will strive toward continuing the growth of the sport from the entry level up through the highest tiers of competition.â€
