  • S550 Mustang Tech: GT350 rear axles

    GT350 AXLE INSTALL

As part of the rear subframe upgrades done to our 2015 Mustang GT, which was made up from a bunch of parts of other S550 Mustangs (salvage titled car), we removed the Ecoboost axles (halfshafts) and replaced them with this Ford Performance GT350 axle shaft kit. This M-4130-M8S part number is a lower cost replacement for the GT axles that comes with stronger GT350 CV joints.

This S550 Mustang rear subframe was from a V6 or Ecoboost car, and the axles looked pretty crusty and small. While it was out of our 2015 GT chassis, Brad pulled the old axles out.

These are the part numbers from the mystery axles that came with this rear subframe - you an see higher resolution images by clicking on each.

These are the part numbers and images of the axles we removed - didn't measure these but they "looked small".

The images below are from a customer's 2016 GT Roush that had some leaky CV boosts, from a service job where we changed both axles. We bought the GT350 axles to replace the GT axles, and got some good measurements and weights from that job.

On that '16 GT the passenger side axle was stuck - which is common. We had to cut apart the inner CV, weld a U-shaped bracket to that inner axle stub, then wail on it with a slide hammer to get it out. Not fun.

The images above were of the GT axles - weights and shaft diameters. The driver's side GT axle is hollow, but nearly 5 pounds lighter than the GT350 driver's side axle (below).

Here are the GT350 axle weights and measurements. Heavier, and the CVs are physically bigger.

The image above shows the GT (dirty) vs GT350 (clean) CV sections, which are larger on the GT350. The splines length and diameter are the same and we've now installed these on 2 cars in place of Ecoboost and GT axles. Several S550 track and autocross folks have sworn by the increased strength of these over the non-GT350 versions.

We used these same GT350 axles in our 2015 GT, and they worked fine in both cars. We also installed the 4.09:1 geared, Auburn Pro diff equipped aluminum axle housing we built for my 2018 GT into the back of our 2015 GT car at the same time.
