    TAMUSCC 40th REUNION

Howdy Ags! It’s the BIG 40th ANNIVERSARY REUNION of the Texas A&M Sports Car Club.

Although there are rumors that TAMUSCC has been around longer, no one can be sure. Some ancient markings recently discovered in the steam tunnels beneath campus indicate an older existence of the club, but carbon dating has so far been inconclusive.

The reunion is scheduled for April 4th, 5th and 6th, 2008 in College Station which is just 9 weeks away. Based on some of the e-mail bantering already in full swing, it sounds like this is going to be a great reunion. I hope everyone who still has their old racer and is feverishly working to get them ready for an appearance at Aggiecross.

That’s right, we are having a one-day Aggiecross at, where else, Texas World Speedway, where we bring out our old cars, or if we destroyed them at some point, our new cars for a fun day of racing. We are very excited about getting together for another reunion and hope that everyone tries to get involved in this one-day blast to the past.
Our database of names/contact information has expanded to include members of more recent years and the current students.
We will have classes set up as they were way back when. The only difference is that we want everyone to walk away from this event with the shiny stuff still shining. So if you haven’t raced in a while (like 20 years or so) then come on out, take it easy and have some real fun.

    The AGENDA is as follows:

Friday night we will have a Tech Inspection/Social Hour. We will also have a Friday Night Driving Experience to tech-in the cars. Although it is not required as part of Tech, all those who still think they see white patches past every intersection will have the opportunity to take a pre-determined route to a party at a secret location. Burgers/Hot Dogs and chips will be served at the party.

Saturday, at TWS, we will have as many runs on the course as possible, and will be shutting down timed runs at roughly 5:00 pm (AGGIECROSS). A Bar-B-Que will follow at the track with awards being given during the meal. We will need to have the majority of the garages cleared at around 5:00 as there is a driving school at the track on Sunday.

Sunday morning, we will have a car display tentatively at Olsen Field. Everyone who raced or wants to display their iron is welcome to display their car. This is as much a time for everyone to chat/brag as it is to display their car. No judging will be performed. We hope that everyone will bring their old car out for the display. At 11:00 we will meet at the REC Center for a Brunch/Video/Time for Reminiscing. During the brunch we will have videos from the past and a few speakers who will talk about the club, history, and comedy of it all. We will also discuss the club and its current configuration, and where we might want to go in the future. Thus strategize how we can exist more formally as an “official” group with some recognized status by Texas A&M (or informally as we currently have been), and ways we may be able to give back to Texas A&M.

Folks, this weekend is designed not to cram too many events into the weekend but more as an opportunity for the TAMSCC family to bond together. What we have learned as a group is that our time at Texas A&M was hugely enriched by the friendships we formed through the Sports Car Club. At the end of our first reunion we realized we didn’t want it to end. Every time we have gathered as a group, there is recognition that our time at A&M and in the Club was special, and that these reunions provide a way of continuing the comradery. So come and join us Ags and Aggiecrossers. Let’s add this to
    the list of great reunions.

There are two hotels where we have secured a block of rooms for Friday and Saturday nights at. They are both on Highway 6 past the bypass towards the track.

Re: TAMSCC 40th Reunion and AGGIECROSS

OK folks, I just posted the details from the e-mail many of us got last night in an all new thread, as the previous thread started last August had already jumped the shark. If you didn't get the e-mail, it wasn't a "slight" it was just the first wave of announcements - this is the second! Its now your duty to point as many TAMSCC folks to this post and get them fired up to enter!

This Reunion is done every 5 or 10 years and they are always a blast. This event is being run by TAMSCC alums (as is usually the case) and not by the current group of TAMSCC officers (which might be a good thing?). The main event to note is AGGIECROSS, which if I remember correctly we haven't had since I was TAMSCC club president, back in what.... 1992?!?! Holy schnikeys that's a long time! The TAMSCC reunions are always good, but with an AGGIECROSS at TWS this time, this one should be memorable!!!!

If you don't know what AGGIECROSS is, well, its what the TAMSCC used to be known for - a big Time Trial style event at Texas World Speedway, using the big road course and main straight. That's right - the TAMSCC did Time Trials before Time Trials were cool. Details are still unclear as to what course configuration we will be running but I am making a call to Lisa now and will report back ASAP. It needs to be the 3.5 mile course!!!

One thing to note: since this isn't a TAMU club sponsored event they can "get away with a little bit more", and if you don't know what is being referenced in the first post about the "Friday night driving experience" with the "white splotches" at intersections... just PM me and I will explain. Please don't get into any additional detail on this event here, as we don't want to tip off the "you know who" on a public forum.

So even if the notice for this Reunion is a bit late in the game, and even tho there are precious few details about the events being done, and there's not some fancy schmancy online registration website, let's ignore those shortcomings and just MAKE THIS HAPPEN! That can only happen if you GET REGISTERED! If you ever went to TAMU or ever entered a TAMSCC event or just WISH you had.... get an e-mail to Lisa with your commitment and print that registration form, fill it out, and get it mailed TODAY!

Sure, $100 might seem like an expensive "autocross" but this is so much more than that, and its at TEXAS WORLD SPEEDWAY. The BMWCCA Oktoberfest '07 autocross cost me $100 and all I got was 4 runs and a broken trophy that said I got 3rd in the car show?! This will be a lot more fun that that.

Post up when you've entered! Amy and I are going!

            hang on a sec....

Whoa.... hold up folks. Holster those checkbooks. I've made several calls and now have "more questions than answers". I'm furiously making more calls now to make sure the TWS event really has a chance of happening. There are still some big unknowns and very few people involved "that need to be."

This could all be cleared up within the next 24 hours so lets not speculate much more, if you can wait. We'll get more answers about the AGGIECROSS portion of the reunion (the only thing many of you care about!) ASAP and post them here, such as:
            • What track configuration will be run
            • What classing will be run
            • Who is the event chairman, setting up workers, timers, the local contact, etc
            • How many runs, how the event will be run, etc.

Re: TAMSCC 40th Reunion and AGGIECROSS

Thanks for the info and keep us in the loop!

That is my fear, the lameazz autocross using a small portion of the roadcourse. Don't get me wrong, I want to go to the event and all, but my enthusiasm drops if we don't run full course.

Each time I hear from "those people running the reunion" I am less and less reassured that an AGGIECROSS event will even happen, much less have an event that runs even semi-smoothly. They are running the "old class rules we used from (I sh!t you not) 1982"....!?! I don't even know WTF the class structures were in the SCCA in 1982. I was still playing with hotwheels in 1982. No event chairman has been named. Bill LeBarge is handling ground work in BCS. I can't make this stuff up...

Todd put it best in the TAMSCC thread (paraphrased):

"They are running the 2.9 mile course.... which is better than nothing.... but 3 runs for $110 doesn't seem worth it."

I concur. I'm gonna sit this one out.

Well, I'm going to go. Hopefully it won't suck (agX prolly will) and I think hangin with the varied folks will be cool. If it sucks, then I'll do the open-track event on Sunday to make up for it!

C'mon Fair, how many customers might you convert there?

Just a normal TWS Motorsports Club day from what I gather.

175$ and several hours of track time.

Re: TAMSCC 40th Reunion and AGGIECROSS

Well I heard from Lisa (one of the people organizing the Reunion/Aggiecross) yesterday and it doesn't look like there are enough paid or even committed entrants. She asked why there weren't more people going, I told her the concerns voiced by many people that I've spoken with and seen online about the Aggiescross event, and she got pretty frosty with me. I dunno, guess she didn't like that people cared about how the Aggiecross event was run, what course it was run on, how many runs we'd get for the money?

I take it from that call that there were a lot fewer paid entrants from "their era" as well, and some key people backed out recently. Anyway, she said they were canceling the event, but I don't know what to believe. Please, don't use my post here as definitive - if you sent in your registration form I would give her a call and ask (her number is in my first post), and if you would still like to go, please call her and register immediately if its not too late.

Its a shame that many key, active members and former members were excluded from the planning of the Aggiecross event. After talking with a bunch of old Ags in the past 2 weeks regarding this Reunion, we've come to the conclusion that maybe an Aggiecross at TWS is still a worthwhile idea (with the "Reunion" portion being done as a banquet for that event). If several TAMSCC alumni could work with the student members/officers they could help bring this event to fruition. It needs to be planned for at least a year in advance and possibly outside of the TAMU institution.

So, if the 40th Reunion/Aggiecross is indeed cancelled, is anyone here interested in helping to bring together an Aggiecross in 2009?

                              Hey guys

the event is not cancelled. Sat down with the organizers tonight and worked out some details. I will be running grid and the event will run as it did when we ran them in the early 90s except it will be on the 2.9 course. Classing is simplistic but who cares. Other than that, it would be cool to get as many people of our era together as possible so generate some names and contacts and pass the word. Personally, it is only f'd up if we don't get our friends to the party!!!!!

What would be really cool is if someone could con Fair into compiling some of the better video onto a dvd/cd for some viewing somewhere Sat night or just get him to bring some of the "collection" that he has promised to put on disc!

FWIW, Karl Kueneman aka 'Grog' has been notified. Andrew McMillan is in Corpus Christi and is notified. I think Stinky is still in LaGrange?
